Super Green Detox Smoothie
Whether you’re on the run, or feeling run-down, this is such a quick and easy body-mind reset.
Getting into the habit of making green smoothies in the morning can be a total game changer for some of my clients.
However, take it easy. If your body isn’t used to a healthy palate the detox symptoms can be overwhelming your liver.
Instead of going all out be gentle with yourself and introduce healthy rituals slowly. Change your taste preferences to delicious whole foods one meal at a time. After a while you’ll be craving really nourishing meals.
To me this is an act of self-love, just like yoga.
Get your glow on!
This healthy green smoothie combines some of my most beloved “everyday superfoods”. No need for gimmicky powders that are all too often just clever marketing, instead let’s focus on REAL FOOD that is available in any good supermarket:
All leafy greens (spinach, kale, parsley, watercress, rucola, swiss chard, bok choy, salad greens...) contain a huge amount of chlorophyll - a phytonutrient that oxygenates and detoxifies the blood. Chlorophyll is rich in enzymes and high in amino acids with a strong alkalizing effect on the body. It shows antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, repairing damaged DNA and speeding up the healing process of wounds, both externally and internally.
The darker the colour of your chosen greens, the more chlorophyll you get. However, I always recommend to vary your greens. Spinach, for example, is amazingly healthy with all its vitamins and minerals, but it also contains high levels of oxalates which binds to minerals in the gut and may prevent calcium absorption. Rotate your greens and you get the best of everything.
One of the most effective remedies if you suffer from an irritable bowel. The aromatic compounds found in fresh peppermint leaves are not only soothing your digestive system, they are also known to ease headaches, period pain and tense muscles - all due to peppermint’s antispasmodic properties.
Loaded with healthy antioxidants, fighting free radicals and protecting your cells from ageing and damage. The bitter-sweet fruit fires up your digestive system and detox channels. Liver and gallbladder are particularly fond of anything bitter. Both grapefruit and apples contain a generous amount of pectins, known to lower cholesterol.
Always a winner, making any smoothie rich, creamy and incredibly nourishing by adding vital vitamins and minerals. Vitamin E, vitamin K, copper, pantothenic acid, folate, vitamin C and vitamin B6 - just to name a few. The healthy fats found in avocado are essential for your body to absorb certain minerals and vitamins, especially Vitamin A and Chlorophyll.
If you like your smoothie to be sweeter you can replace the avocado with a small banana. More sugar obviously, but just as creamy and deliciously healthy.
Certain ingredients, like leafy greens and apples, I always buy organic. But with anything that I can peel (grapefruit, avocado) I’m not soooo bothered.
Do keep in mind though that you vote with your dollar. It is without a question that sustainable, organic, local produce is better for mother earth - and for yourself.
