DE-CLUTTER YOUR MIND.
India’s most ancient technique of meditation is a simple, yet highly effective practice. Due to its transformative results in focus, mental clarity, self-awareness and inner peace, Vipassana is becoming increasingly popular amongst world-class performers, from athletes to CEO’s.
Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, was taught in India more than 2500 years ago. It is said that this very simple (but not easy...) technique was the meditative practice of the Buddha through which he gained enlightenment.
Admittedly I'm not quite there yet but it's good to know your destination, right?!
In the past my meditation practice was not as fully committed as my yoga practice, but since moving to Ibiza this unbelievably effective tool has become an essential and neccessary part of my morning and evening rituals. Like brushing my teeth I am clearing my mind.
We are so busy in our daily lives that any form of silence and stillness feels hugely uncomfortable, even just for 10 minutes. Like a gap that needs to be filled. We should be doing something, right? Be productive and achieve more.
Well, with a regular meditation practice you are doing something massively important - for your physical and mental health. Meditation can lead to remarkable transformative results, yet we have such resistance to stillness.
By focusing on your breath you will notice the endless thinking that is going on in your mind. The monkey mind (or I call it the monster mind) has its place and can be very useful, but it can get a little out of control and run away with us.
Most of the time we're not aware of our thoughts and the stories we tell ourselves. But when we get quiet this constant chatter of the mind becomes crystal clear. It's like looking at blue skies & bright sunlight and noticing the clouds that come and go and occasionally overshadow the light of the sun.
In the same way that clouds can temporarily obscure but cannot damage the light-giving power of the sun, so too the temporary afflictions of body and mind - our confusion, anxiety, cravings, fear and the suffering they cause - can temporarily obscure but cannot destroy or even touch the fundamentally clear and pure nature of our consciousness.
Discovering this deeply rooted source within you through meditation is extremely powerful.
Lifechanging in fact.
Through meditation you can discover destructive habits and negative beliefs. As your mind gets quiet your intuition and creative juices start flowing again. The nervous system calms down and new, healthy neural pathways begin to develop in the brain (all this is scientifically proven).
Focus. Concentration. Clarity.
Observing my thoughts and feelings and not identifying with any of them has made a HUGE difference to my life. As they say, don't believe everything you're thinking!
Having experienced sufficient trauma as a child, meditation helps me to reset my brain and control my overdeveloped Hypothalamus (the part of the brain that is responsible for the instinctual reaction of "fight-flight-freeze" and all the stress hormons that get released accordingly).
My yoga practice gives me incredible strength and determination, but the stillness I find in Vipassana is essential if I want to get out of my irrational fear-based mind and rewrite the stories I am telling myself.
Strength. Wisdom. Healing.
Through yoga and meditation, my two powerful tools, I discover every day that there is so much more depth and stability within me. That I know all the answers - infinitive wisdom and healing capacity - I do not need to search outside of myself.
It frees up my energy not only to enjoy life to the fullest, but to pursue what I believe to be my destiny.
